Cruise into history – 7th June 2015
Sunday 20 September – A Cruise into History
Beginning at Hoghton Tower, an Elizabethan manor house near Preston where King James I is said to have knighted a loin of beef. Rejoin our coach to travel a short distance to board our boat for three hour cruise along the Liverpool to Leeds canal. We will pass by countryside once transformed by the Industrial Revolution on to Johnson Hilloch Locks. In between chatting and viewing the scenery we will be served hotpot, apple pie, wine or fruit juice and tea or coffee. Extra drinks can be purchased and there are toilets on board. Coach departs opposite HQ at 12.45pm. Return approx 9.00pm. Cost £37.00.

Tuesday 6 October – Allied Nurses of the First World War.
Using evidence from archives throughout the world Christine Hallett will present a compelling account of the work of nurses and their contribution to the allied cause on both the Western and Eastern fronts.
Christine is Professor of Nursing History at the University of Manchester and Chair of the UK Association for the History of Nursing. She holds Fellowships of both the Royal Society for the Arts and the Royal Society of Medicine. She has published extensively on the subject of nursing and is advisor to the BBC on the same subject.
We will also hear about a nurse from local history who was one of the first nurses to enter Belsen concentration camp in 1945.
Tuesday 3 November – Lusitania Life Loss Legacy
Lusitania’s sinking on 7 May 1915 was one of the most significant incidents of the First World War. Her loss had a profound effect on the city of Liverpool and surrounding area. Ellie Moffatt, curator of Merseyside Maritime Museum will relate the history of Lusitania and the pivotal role local seafarers, their ships, ferries and trawlers played in both world wars.
A short film When The Lights Go On Again concludes the afternoon as our commemoration of the end of World War Two.
Tuesday 1 December – Trouble at t’ Mill
The workers have gone to the ‘Village Square’ to celebrate Lancashire Day. Will it be a lock-out? More details later.
